Miner Wars 2081 is presented by its parents as a game of survival and space shoot, a kind of Descent-like modern times associated with partially destructible decorations and mechanical gathering of resources in a world more or less open. Admit that on paper, it is still terribly want! Also, if you are not afraid to make your breakfast by twirling in all directions without notion of high or low and if the prospect of diving into an app that explains nothing about its operation does not scare you, then maybe you should be thinking about putting on your spacesuit.
As its title subtly suggests, Miner Wars 2081 takes us into a relatively near future, 11 years after an experiment on the Sun slightly thwarted it and pushed it to spray the majority of the celestial bodies of the system. Humanity, divided into several antagonistic factions, is now trying to survive in space by exploiting resources scattered in the void in the form of asteroid fields. The campaign of Miner Wars, largely scripted and spreading on about thirty missions (in addition to proposing to walk freely on a rather large space map), places us thus in the satined skin of the aptly named Apollo, a young pilot of the American-European Confederation who will quickly find himself in the middle of the fair.
Indeed, a Russian attack on the small civilian outpost in which he officiates with his brother, the nag Marcus, plunges the man into turmoil. He will also be joined by Madelyn (from Proust?), Pilot of a small mothership that will serve as a base for each of his missions. Anyway, Apollo’s willingness to discover the reasons for this seemingly gratuitous assault will make him wander through every corner of the solar system. This is the starting point of a nice story and rather damn good despite a good gaggle of clichés and stereotypes, but it is also the beginning of many hours of suffering in the face of a game that does not explains almost nothing of his duties. And there, we are already starting to touch what is the attraction but also the biggest problem of Miner Wars. Because yes, we have the first impression that there is plenty of stuff to do, then we get lost in conjectures to discover the purpose.
Owl is said at the beginning, we can collect resources with drills in asteroids that will definitely bear the stigma of the excavation! Except what do we do next? In the end, after many speculations, we realize that we will usually be content to sell our minerals to merchants to recover the pépètes then invest in very expensive improvements to our ship, unless ‘we eyeing a whole new model. In the end, Miner Wars is above all a game of exploration: we crisscross a whole bunch of quite successful sectors, in which we will fall as well on zombieships that you are hitting on it to explode you on bizarre outposts, Trade stations and other things that we leave you to discover.
During these phases, you will also be entitled to random solar flares, indicated by your detectors a few seconds before their arrival. It will then seek to hide yourself on pain of seeing your little guy get burned. Admit that the prospect of having to urgently dig a missile hole in the nearest asteroid is quite immersive. But when you are forced to this end in a fight while the enemies themselves, can stay in the panties in a wave of flames, well it immediately loses its charm. Miner Wars 2081 is always a little like that: lots of good ideas, but not necessarily well exploited.
In another register, the survival aspect advocated by the developers comes mainly from the fact that it will always be necessary to watch over the various gauges representing the state of your ship: integrity of the hull, armor, fuel, health of the pilot and oxygen. All these gauges decrease of course when you undergo attacks but also in normal operation, during the exploration. To fill all this, you will have the option to buy gasoline, oxygen, care, repair packs (but also ammunition for your different weapons) and then stick them in your inventories in case of extended mission, but you can also find out merchants or boxes distributed everywhere in different environments. This may be just a detail for you, but surprisingly, it seems that the developers have not assumed the hardcore aspect of their baby and have chosen to sprinkle all their bonus cards whose random presence night to immersion. Strange indeed to find everything in a scientific complex disemboweled and looted many times by pirates. Obviously, we did not ask Miner Wars 2081 to give in the realism, but there, we still swim between two waters and we can see that the survival dimension is perhaps not as satisfactory as it could have been. hope.
As far as fighting is concerned, since we have to talk about it for a while, we find controls quite similar to those we could use in a Descent or a Forsaken. We can turn in any direction in the blink of an eye, rotate on its axis and thus ignore the notions of high and low. This remains less confusing than in Descent, although a lot of fights will take place in the tortuous corridors of space bases. If all works pretty well, again, we find fault. And this time, it’s the enemies who take it. In fact, the buggers represent a danger only by their ability to collect a lot of damage and by their mere number, but not by their behavior or their driving. Most of them are content to move towards you like crazy (always keeping the underside of their ship down) and never take advantage of the great freedom of movement offered by the game, any more than the possibility of explode some of the scenery. In short, we quickly realize that it is enough to turn around a target to shatter. And in confined spaces, it is enough to stick behind an airlock, to wait for the buggers to engulf themselves there one by one and to explode them. Oops.
The game also suffers from rude worries, such as honestly ill-considered checkpoints, which like to make you restart your game 3 seconds before a missile explodes. Great, especially as Miner Wars can be really hardcore. As such, we can also say that the game does not really find a balance between its Easy mode, really too easy and its Normal mode, horribly violent at times.
