Hard to say what Lords of the Fallen was supposed to look like at the beginning of its development, in 2011, still, in 2014, things are clear and nobody hides: it’s a clone of Dark Souls . Endurance bar that reduces each hit, every roll, dodge fights, observation, face lambda enemies as capable of putting you on the mat as bosses, equipment weight to watch, attacks and parades with the shield to be done with the triggers … The amateurs of the productions From Software will be like at home.

Except that, if the foundations are similar, the decoration and therefore the artistic direction of Lords of the Fallen is more of a cross between Darksiders and Diablo III than a copy-pasted of the morbid and grandiose universe of Dark Souls. A part of soul less so, because what makes a lot of the charm of the series of From Software, it is also its atmosphere, its environments, its style. Here, everything is much more generic, more “nagging”.

And the power of the PS4, if it offers a clean game but not free of some concerns of tearing, interlacing, does not transcend the whole by a technique that dazzle our retinas. It must also be said that if Lords of the Fallen makes a little more effort to tell that Dark Souls (and even if the mysteries of Souls are not a fault), the plot remains rather insensitive and put forward to be interested, Lords of the Fallen then bet all about its gameplay. Not on his French VF in any case, appreciable, but a little laughable.

And at first glance, when you control Harkyn, you already feel a little more at ease than in Dark Souls. Even if, according to the chosen class (among three), the character will weigh more or less heavy, the animations seem more fluid here, which allows some combos. In fact, what unfortunately comes to undermine this good general impression is firstly the artificial intelligence of enemies.

Sometimes with strawberries, and especially boss fights, which if they are often impressive, respond to patterns rather boring. Once killed, we often feel not that we have lacked judgment or dexterity, but rather that in the face of the length of the fighting, we gave up a little. The intervals in which one can hurt his opponent are often very short, and the fights drag on a little unnecessarily.

However, it is true that Lords of the Fallen is today the game that comes closest to the series of From Software, and that brings his little thing more with an inventory provided in spells as equipment, or with several postures of combat by arms to be mastered.

If Dark Souls had its fire, Lords of the Fallen has its crystals which, if used, do not impose the respawn. In the end, the general feeling of this title is that the “sondeputerie” Souls is less present, that many things are more comfortable, but in the end the few defects of the title, coupled with a lack of personality, do not allow him to climb to the level of his model.
