Borderlands, it is at the same time a FPS supercharged in cel shading and a mature role playing, irreverent, and to say everything, completely crazy. In 2009, the original episode allowed us to go in search of an extraterrestrial Ark full of treasures on the mysterious Pandora planet. Plunged into a merciless post-apocalyptic far-west, the player could embody 4 totally different characters to slaughter the cohorts of hungry bandits or critters who got in their way. Long, nervous and well-done, Borderlands quickly became a stunner of choice for FPS fans tired of reliving for the twelfth time in World War II or constantly defending a well-meaning Western world threatened by dreadful fanatical terrorists. Here, no great ideals, hypocritical morality and above all no politically correct: the inhabitants of Pandora are all more crazy than one another, we swear, we drink, and the only goal of our hunter of the Ark is simply to enrich oneself by eliminating all those who want to prevent it.

Five years after the outcome of his predecessor, Borderlands 2 invites us today to return to Pandora in the skin of 4 new characters determined to put themselves too full pocket. Salvador, the first of them, is a defender who is so well trained in weapon handling that, thanks to his special skill, he can momentarily use two at a time while regaining health points. Brutal and resilient, this easy-to-play character is a natural fit for players who like to rush into the pile without asking questions. Maya, for her part, is a siren capable of neutralizing an opponent for a few moments by using her Locking power or healing her allies. Particularly useful in multiplayer, it will allow experienced players to set up complex and effective strategies. Axton is a Commando armed with a Scorpio 2.0 turret very useful to defend a position or to break enemy lines. Finally, the enigmatic Zer0 is an unpublished Assassin who is as good at long-distance combat as at hand-to-hand combat. Versatile, very stylish, with the ability Leurr3 making it disappear 5 seconds to flee or launch a critical attack, it’s a safe bet that it becomes the release of the soft new darling of fans of the series even if a fifth class, the Mécromancienne, is also likely to make a tobacco pre-order or DLC.

Always so inhospitable, Pandora is now also led by the charismatic and tyrannical director of D’hyperion Corporation known as the Beau Jack. Foolish, despicable and utterly unscrupulous, the latter has succeeded in bringing the population to a standstill with his army of robots and plans to appeal to an evil alien entity to establish his domination of the world. Left for dead by this new super villain notoriously allergic to the hunters of the Ark, the player is saved in extremis by Clap Trap, the unbearable droid blunder of the first game. Over the course of the adventure, he will be taken despite himself to join the resistance led by Roland (one of the four playable heroes in 2009) to have a chance to survive in the chaos ambient. Needless to say, this rather classic scenario is only a pretext for us to meet or fight the most delirious characters on the planet. From the eccentric Sir Hammerlock (an azimuthed gentleman) to this good old doctor Zed through the cruel captain Flynt (a new boss) or the whimsical Scooter, the gallery of portraits, known or unpublished, that we will cross is worth his weighing peanuts. The very raw dialogues are sometimes excessively outrageous and the dubbing in French is a bit heavy but they are often funny if you know how to appreciate the trashy humor.

While we thought we had seen everything Pandora in the original episode, Borderlands 2 allows us to survey a host of new areas in new environments. From the Arctic tundra in which we make our first weapons, to the meadow through caves riddled with traps, there is something to see of the country, especially as the total playing area is considerably larger than formerly . Of course, the scenery beautifully made that we will see is full of looters, psychopaths and other monsters thirsting for blood. In addition to skags and bandits, the player will this time have the pleasure of facing new opponents such as huge monkey Garogos, cruel Rovers or Hyperion robots. Good news, their intelligence has been greatly improved so that they are able to interact with each other (wild beasts regularly attack humans) and most gunfights now have a real tactical dimension. No more running in the open by stupidly emptying our charger on static and stupid enemies; they regularly cover each other, they cover each other and flee when the situation requires it. Moreover, the fighting is much more dynamic than in the first opus. Canard in all directions, grenades fly and units in hand-to-hand throw themselves on us in heartbreaking screams. This is especially true in multiplayer as the number of enemies increases according to the number of players (2 to 4 online or in local network). Any skirmish is likely to take on epic proportions and adrenaline rushes are common.

Overall, Borderlands 2’s first-person gameplay has all the basics of its predecessor. Easy to control and largely customizable, the controls allow to control very effectively our character to exploit the many resources. We can use countless weapons, equip ourselves with various shields, customize our grenades, specialize in several skill trees, etc. In terms of novelties, note for example the appearance of disposable weapons that balance on the enemy instead of reloading. We can drive on the roads at the wheel of new vehicles capable of boarding our entire team. The treatment no longer needs to go through the menu and, once on the ground, our character is able to crawl for a few seconds in the hope of obtaining a Second Breath. The various challenges that can be met during the adventure (kill enemies at night, open so many chests …) now allow us to gain Brutasse levels and tokens to permanently increase the statistics of all our heroes and all the equipment related to our profile. The skills of people divided into 3 areas have been reworked while remaining consistent with their class. Thus, a Mermaid can now focus her progress on the support of her allies (Harmony), on her agility (Displacement) or on her ability to damage (Cataclysm). It will not be played in the same way as in 2009. The assassin, formidable in hand-to-hand, also has little to do with Mordecai and his famous familiar even if we find for example the same affinity for long distance shooting. Last but not least, it is now possible to customize the appearance of our characters and vehicles in every detail, which is not luxury when we remember the lack of options that were once available in this domain.

However, despite Gearbox Software’s efforts to renew the gaming experience, Borderlands 2 remains so close to its predecessor that an untrained user could almost be mistaken. No striking gameplay mechanism has emerged and with a few exceptions, how to use our equipment (Shields, grenades, etc.) is almost the same as before. Same observation for the development of the scenario that is furiously closer to the previous one or for the variety of missions. The latter are more numerous, but in substance they do not differ much from those we have hitherto experienced. Clean an area, go get a battery, find an NPC … Nothing new under the sun. It would also have liked the developers to further optimize the driving of vehicles or seriously look at the problems of menu ergonomics including inventory. Indeed, the latter are still as badly damn and it is not uncommon to commit false manipulations inadvertently.
