Fans wanted a One Piece fighting game? Well, they’ll get it. That’s what some of Bandai Namco’s thinking heads must have said. That’s what we heard from Koji Nakajima and Hiroyuji Kanedo, game producer and game director of One Piece Burning Blood respectively. A request that came, to believe them, mostly non-Japanese fans of the license. And then, why deprive yourself? Bandai Namco has some legacy, in terms of fighting games, and Spike Chunsoft is not on his first try. Fighting games from Japanese anime, they know it: Spike, before merging with Chunsoft, was responsible for a remarkable trilogy of Dragon Ball Z games, Budokai Tenkaichi. Did they foolishly take up the magic recipe for this new title? Well not really, as we could have seen by trying One Piece Burning Blood.

One Piece Baaninga Burado, as our Japanese friends say, is a more conventional fighting game than the aforementioned Tenkaichi. Controls are of course easier to understand, since it is no longer a question of flying. And overall, the game is very quickly in hand: strong shot, weak shot, jump, guard … The sequences come out very easily, evoking of course the “combos” Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm, to whom some blame a certain simplistic. Luckily, the key combinations are more numerous, and have the merit of not all ending up on a final “striking” blow (the Chidori and Rasengan coming out at all the sauces …), and coming back too often.

Displacements are pretty nervous, and it is possible to pound his opponent with the different super-attacks that each character has. In the manner of a Tenkaichi, you only need to hold one of the triggers on your controller and choose Triangle, Square or Round to start a devastating technique. It’s even easier for the ultimate attacks: wait for your gauge to be filled, press R3 twice and then your character uses his most powerful attack. Needless to say, all this does not require a great technical mastery. But it’s mainly your ability to use all the controls of the game and some of its specificities that will make you the master of the game.

Because Burning Blood still offers some peculiarities to him. The fights, which take place in arenas of medium size but loaded with destructible elements (like the Tenkaichi, again), rest on a very particular format: that of the three against three. You will have to choose three fellows in a roster of characters whose exact number we do not know yet. With a joystick, you have the possibility to change fighter, if the dedicated gauges are filled; a system reminiscent of the Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm, also edited by Bandai Namco.

The small news is that it is possible to counter an enemy attack with these switch characters: with the right timing, you can save your life bar by bringing out of nowhere one of your favorite pirates. The system is rather well seen and recalls that in One Piece, friendship and cooperation is at the heart of the fighting. We regret, however, that the window against is so wide, and it seems very difficult to miss, making manipulation too easy (or all journalists present were all extremely talented, which I highly doubt).

Following the evolution of Oda’s work, it seems that Spike Chunsoft has decided to limit his roster to users of Fruits of the Devil and / or Haki. In this preview, 8 characters were playable: Luffy and Ace, Zorro, Bartolomeo, Crocodile, Sabo, Kuzan and Franky. In the list, the latter is a bit of an exception, but Hiroyuji Kanedo told us that characters like him have enough weapons to fight against the monsters that are Kuzan or Ace.
