The first Pole game from Weappy Studio, This Is the Police download puts us in the shoes of Jack Boyd, police chief of a corrupt city to the very core where murder, hostage, assault and theft are daily. But the man, retired by the mayor after 30 years of loyal service, has nothing to do. Her goal is to raise $ 500,000 before she leaves in six months to get her fresh and enjoy her new life. A task far from easy when we see that the mafia, gangs, conspiracies and a corrupt mayor are on the chessboard of this narrative management game.

Combining management and narration in an efficient way is the challenge that This is the Police is trying to overcome. While offering phases of play where your management skills are required to ensure the safety of the city of Freeburg, the title takes the time to set a context and an atmosphere that smells of the 80s, thrillers and movies black. The narration is mainly through comic book sequences that sometimes appear between two days of work, some of which may require the player to make decisions, such as the answers to give journalists at a press conference. The rendering is a seductive minimalism, with this polygonal graphic aspect reminiscent of Another World, accompanied by an intuitive and refined interface, even if these famous cutscenes probably sinned by their lack of animations. The overall aesthetics and ambience are well controlled (special mention to sound design) and help bring out the dark side of the city, a daily source of headache for Jack Boyd, anti-hero in all its splendor that benefits Jon St. John’s dubbing vocals (Duke Nukem’s voice).

While he tells us his states of mind, his thoughts, his ambitions or his complicated story with his wife over the weeks, we quickly get affection for our protagonist whose goal is to amass a pretty bonanza. Specifically, the game starts on day 1, each day always taking place in the same way: the reading of newspapers, often related to our actions the day before, the start of the car, the choice of a music, the alternating between classic and jazz style to perfectly get in the mood, then the man takes place in front of his reduced model of Freeburg installed in his office, where takes place the gameplay phase.

From there, it is mainly necessary to answer, before a limited time, the telephone calls to solve the crimes appearing on the map. These are briefly described by a text, in order to be able to estimate their gravity and to send on the spot the adequate number of policemen, keeping in mind the efficiency value of these as well as their fatigue gauge and the time to get to the crime scene. It’s all about timing and that’s all the salt of the game, which is often a feeling of powerlessness when all our forces are deployed, sometimes for hoaxes, and an important crime appears, leaving us in a state of helplessness. the impossibility of solving it.

Be forewarned, there is reading to put in the tooth since each crime is different from the previous one, which does not prevent that one ends up quickly deploying mechanically our forces without even taking the time to read. If it’s quite fun at the beginning thanks to the number of absurd situations (from the simple homicide to the woman who dies at all goes in a fast food screaming that she “hates the big ones”), the apparent lack of depth in the management is quickly felt. We just click as quickly as possible on boxes to respond to dialogue choices since there is no action scene, simply an alliance between text and image. Rare variations of gameplay are added over the hours of play, such as the ability to afford the services of the mafia or a multinational to open a secret bank account and secure his money, but they are mostly bad exploited or even completely useless.

In order to bring a minimum of rebound, some crimes trigger pop-ups asking to make action choices, even if one can easily distinguish the right choice to make other absurd choices. It is also necessary to manage the detectives, necessary to solve the more sensitive cases by reconstituting the course of a crime thanks to a system of executives to replace in the order. Interesting in their concept, these investigations are finally sluggish and poorly explained, with little interest in terms of reward. The enthusiasm of the early hours thus quickly gives way to a soporific effect. Regrettable when there was so much to do with this solid base of gameplay (psychological management of police officers, possibility of building a network of police stations …).

The difficulty also fades quickly enough, provided we take precautions on the management of our staff of agents: balance between the two services that run every day, very limited staff in the first weeks to the point of duty abandon certain calls or go under-staff and risk the life of an agent or a civilian, taking into account the vagaries of life (fatigue, illness, family death …), but also dismissal ( legal or not) less effective members and recruitment, an aspect of the game impacted by our choices and actions.
