Originally Czech and then German and passed by three different developers, the series Black Mirror download returns fourteen years after its debut for an episode supposed to restart the series, soberly titled Black Mirror and edited by THQ Nordic. This is clearly not the best known of all point’n click series and clearly not the most popular either. So why make a remake? The mystery remains whole. As complete as the one hovering over the Gordon family, owners of the Scottish mansion that gives its name to the series. Having no close link with its namesake televisual, the series proposed a horrific Gothic universe still present in this new album which, without much surprise, has changed to become a game of adventure “modern”, abandoning as many licenses its original form of point’n click. All hopes were allowed seeing that the license was taken over by the German developers at King Art Games who proved themselves with The Book of Unwritten Tales. But obviously, hope has little place in the dark universe of Black Mirror.

When quoting Lovecraft inspiration or Poe, this raises certain expectations in terms of atmosphere. So when a game decides to throw us without any introduction in an action scene during which we just flee by controlling an unknown character, while voices scream in our ears, we are entitled to ask some questions about the overall subtlety of the object. Fortunately, the discomfort is quickly dispelled and one finds oneself then in the skin of the true main character, David Gordon, en route for the family manor to settle some problems of inheritance after the sudden disappearance of his father. A fairly classic story in short, but that shows its weaknesses fairly quickly: the main concern that the image of John, the father of Gordon, the only characters with substance are those whose game speaks a lot but with which we never really interact. The inhabitants of the manor house, on the other hand, are rather flat, in addition to matching the well-worn clichés: the mistress of the place is haughty, the gruff butler, the timid and impressionable maid … In a word like a hundred, there are There is not much to be learned from this side.

Fortunately for us and to put a little animation in all this: it seems that a curse hovers over the very old Scottish family Gordon. In any case, this is what our hero’s father believed and what he begins to believe also when he is caught up in strange visions. These extra-lucid phases are handled in a rather original way, since they are past events shown in a loop to allow players time to examine the different details in order to understand their meaning. On paper it is rather a good idea and in general everything is going well enough, although it is sometimes a bit difficult to understand the relevance of the order in which the various elements in question are made accessible. Where the rub is that these visions can simply kill the main character, and this way quite incomprehensible. The field of vision is narrowing and a sound indicates an imminent danger as a warning, certainly, but there is no logic in the fact that it happens. Even more serious: there are senseless situations in which, for example, missing a phase allows the vision to push, make fall and kill our hero, but if we succeed, it falls in exactly the same place and the same way, but do not die.

The more we advance in the game, the more it is clear that a certain number of elements are missing for the story to stand. If it is never really unpleasant to follow the adventures of David, it is also true that it will not be necessary to hold on to the verisimilitude of certain passages. If this is mostly not embarrassing, it becomes a bit embarrassing when you realize that the presence of Leah, the character accompanying the hero for a reason somewhat vague, is never clearly explained. Worse, she eludes the question when asked what she does there, and there will never be justification for her presence until the end of the adventure. This is indeed the only mystery that will never be resolved to Black Mirror, since everything else in general has a rather common explanation. Like the magical characters who always have all the solutions, here is the same element that will serve as an excuse for everything.

Attempt of modernity requires, Black Mirror follows a road already borrowed by many licenses and sacrifices the quantity and the difficulty of the puzzles on the altar of the QTE. To say that there is little to do in the game would be perfectly dishonest, since there was no moment of emptiness during our six hours on the adventure. On the other hand, there are very few riddles and even if they are rather pleasant to solve, they happen to be rather classic and rather easy. The main difficulty lies in reality often in the very stiff control of the hero and in a rather particular design choice. Indeed, many passages take place at night, but the character who holds the candle (we are in 1926) is not at all the hero David, but Leah, his “assistant”. So we often grope in the dark, waiting for Leah to catch up to light the way. To qualify the thing as annoying would be to largely underestimate the problem since, the management of the lighting being very correct, when there is no lighting, one hardly sees there. Fortunately – so to speak – there are not many ways to solve problems, as the solution is usually close to worry.

If the puzzles are pleasant, there is an element that is not at all and these are the QTE. Black Mirror is full and if the classics “press a key” and “press a key repeatedly” are quite boring but passable, others are absolutely unbearable. Regularly, after certain visions or traumatic events that our hero lives, this one is found extremely confused. During these passages, the game imposes a QTE of putting the pointer inside a moving circle and keeping it there until it calms down. So far nothing dramatic and it would be quite livable if these passages were not accompanied by a loud and very sharp sound recalling the worst effects feedback imaginable. Not happy to do it once, the game repeats this gimmick many times and it is difficult to sustain if you play the headphones.

The hearing is not particularly spoiled by Black Mirror, even if the music is correct and the voices are of a quality quite acceptable for this type of production. Visually, however, it’s a bit more complex. For a title that wants to be modern in its intention, it is a shame to be faced with a modeling and animations of another time and invisible walls as coarse as, for example, that posed in the middle of the hall of the manor because the camera is not planned to make a complete turn. Instead of letting us explore everything we see, we find ourselves stopped for no reason by an obstacle halfway, and sent back a year backwards. On the other hand, the lighting is often quite pretty, which slices all the more with decors correct, but without great personality.
