The Kickstarter funded The Banner Saga really does not make it easy for us. It confuses, lies, disappoints, is in places really mean and punishes us even if we play perfectly. Nevertheless, or just because of this, hardly any other strategy game has fascinated us so much in recent years.
Alette spans her bow and shoots. The arrow pierces a storming city guard, who collapses screaming. Actually, we should be happy, after all, our tactics worked out perfectly. If there was not this speech bubble over Alette’s head. I did not want to do that. And we feel really bad./span>
It all starts quite harmless. A chic cartoon intro takes us into a mythical world inspired by Norse legends, in which there are no more gods and a coalition of humans and giants (called Varl) has won a war against the Golem-style “dredge”. Our journey begins in the skin of Varl-wise Ubin, who in the settlement “beach” actually only wants to collect taxes, but suddenly has to defend the life of the local mayor.
Even before we can unravel the story-pie made of gods, races, names and tax collectors, we are already in our first turn-based battle of tactics. And she too confuses us more than she helps us. Although a forced tutorial leads us through the skirmish as if on rails (we can only click on what the game dictates), it only explains the most important basic rules.
Why the combat system is the best and the most sophisticated, what the strategy genre currently has to offer, we only get to know many battles later. By trying out in the (always available) training battles. But above all by mistake. If you want to survive any fight in hurray style and lossless, is definitely at the wrong address at The Banner Saga.
The biggest feature: Each unit has a shield and a strength value, the latter also corresponds to the life points. We can only attack one of each pair per turn. And already the brain is smoking. For the less shield points an opponent has, the more damage we can inflict on him afterwards. But the less strength points he has, the less damage we have to fear. Much depends on which unit may move next and where it is.
In addition, we may increase any attack with limited available willpots, which will regenerate only if we allow the unit to suspend a turn. Of course, each of our up to six heroes on the battlefield has individual character traits and both active and passive special abilities. The longer Alette stays in one position, the more damage her bow causes, with the shield of Varl-Held Iver we repel enemies and ideally directly on others.
