Affected on the distant Pandora moon, you have been chosen from thousands of others to participate in the Avatar program. The idea is to make you control a hybrid creature, conceived from your own DNA and that of the local intelligent species: the Na’vis. The avatars are destined to evolve more easily on a world whose fauna and flora prove incredibly hostile. It must be said that the entrails of Pandora contain a mineral with extraordinary properties that arouses the desires of human leaders.

The use of avatars also makes it possible to get closer to the Navis singulars and to try to understand the nature of the almost magical link that unites them with their planet. Ethnology here is no more than another tool to subjugate the natives and exploit Pandora without any hindrance. The Na’vis, a tribal people steeped in tradition and respect for nature, are gradually being dispossessed of their land in the name of “progress”. In this context, conflict of course seems inevitable.

Avatar thus seeks to make us live the struggle of a world, of an entire ecosystem, against an outside invader supported by a formidable technology. The theme of the bow against the rifle or more clearly, that of the nature against the machine, plays with full. In these conditions, we can only regret that the staging is as agreed and as awkward, like the sequence where we will eventually choose his side. Indeed, it’s after an hour of play and some basic missions designed to teach you the basics of gameplay (as a base soldier or as an avatar) that you have to opt for one of the two factions, and thus access one of the two available campaigns.

The game still has the good taste to operate a small additional automatic backup, just to allow the player to tackle the other campaign when he wishes. This is not a simple commercial circle, as the two adventures are indeed distinct. They offer truly different missions and gameplay, despite some common environments. Each branch can be completed in 6 or 7 hours, which gives the title a lifetime more than reasonable.

By choosing to participate in the “xenocide” Na’vis alongside humans, you will go through an adventure quite similar to that proposed by a certain Lost Planet, but in light version. As a soldier, you will have to do a whole bunch of pretty similar missions that basically consist of eradicating everything in your path. First of all, you will have to collect the Na’vis themselves, which largely compensate for their rudimentary equipment with a Herculean force, a demonic speed and an ability to blend into Pandora’s environment. But the big, blue-skinned aliens will not be the only ones to want you dead.

Carnivorous plants capable of projecting poisonous gas, artillery bulbs, plant mines, as well as vipers as fragile as snarling will be counted on. Occasionally, you’ll even have to huddle with some hypertrophied specimens of wildlife, such as this friendly titanosaur that only wanted to live quietly in the forest.

Finally, our proud human warrior will regularly use a few vehicles, such as buggies, hovercrafts, mechas, mobile missile ramps and even futuristic helicopters. Lack of luck, most of the gear in Avatar are real horrors to drive … It’s all the more unfortunate that on foot, shootings are very successful, despite a perfectible AI and d ‘a lack of obvious challenge.
