Call of Duty WW2 is the next episode of Activision’s FPS game series. The publisher has decided to return to its historical bases and gameplay: intense, punitive fights in a context of World War II.

So it was during an express trip to London that the videogame press was able to attend the presentation of the “new Call of Duty”. As soon as we enter the room where the event will be held, we notice quite quickly the different visuals leaked a few weeks ago, which confirm the title and the title of the game: Call of Duty WWII. The D-Day will be the part, and it is the whole range of key scenes of the first CoD and the old Medal of Honor that come to mind.

How has Sledgehammer succeeded in putting them back on the table to justify this return to the roots? This is what we were going to discover a few minutes later through a trailer, a classic presentation by slides, exposing the “bullet points” of the title, but also thanks to 2 sequences of gameplay that you will not see immediately on the internets: one in the forest and one on the beaches of the allied landing. A roundtable was also held to allow us to ask questions of the two co-founders of the studio, Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield. Leaving London a few hours later, we were reassured as to the direction the franchise would take, and that’s why.

Call of Duty WWII is one of the main features of the franchise, namely the “One Man Army”, a concept that made the success of the saga by placing the player at the center of an intrigue, giving him kind of capabilities, opportunities, and equipment so that he can overcome, almost alone, his opponents. An essential component of the classic action video game, but which in the series has always been exacerbated to the possible.

The picture depicted by the two emblematic members of Sledgehammer for their title during the presentation is at odds with this vision. The soldier of the second war who is embodied in Call of Duty: WWII is for them “a lambda type”, not trained for what he is going to live, which gradually fits into a squad, which will soon become his surrogate family.

The different war stories and archives that the developers were able to analyze during the pre-production of the title led them to move towards this idea of “necessary complementarity” between the different members of the team. This is not an evil because the player’s empathy for his character and his allies comes here from their strengths, but also from their weaknesses, a point that tended to erase the different episodes of the franchise.

Our hero does not consider himself as such and, according to developers, the key to realism and immersion so sought after for this episode, treated by its creators as a homage that must be “humble, authentic , and brutal, “in order to recount the intensity of the fighting and the human barbarism that prevailed during this conflict, the most murderous of all time.

Red Daniels, a young American soldier whose adventure begins to landing on French beaches. “Red” is also and above all the nickname of the father of Glen Schofield, given by the grandfather of the latter, veteran of the Second World War. It was given to the main character of the adventure because the father of Glen died during the development of the title. This tribute, given by the team of Sledgehammer, reflects the studio’s mood, committed to making this episode as faithful and respectful as possible, even if it is a little too much to blur the (recent) codes of the saga.
